The F-102A Delta Dagger was primarily used by the United States Air Force (USAF) as a supersonic interceptor to defend against Soviet bombers from 1956 to 1976. It served extensively in the US (Air Defense Command), Europe, and Asia, notably in the Vietnam War for air patrols and B-52 escorts, and with air forces in Greece and Turkey.
Key Deployment Locations and Roles:
- United States/North America: The primary base for the Air Defense Command (ADC), with significant presence at bases like Travis AFB, Elmendorf AFB (Alaska), and Tyndall AFB (Florida).
- Vietnam/Southeast Asia: Deployed from 1962 to 1969 to South Vietnam (primarily Tan Son Nhut Air Base) for air defense interceptor missions, bomber escort (B-52), and limited ground attack.
- Europe (USAFE): Stationed in the Netherlands (Camp New Amsterdam) and deployed to bases in Libya (Wheelus AB), Germany (Ramstein AB, Erding AB), and Spain (Torrejón AB) between 1959 and 1964.
- International Operators: Used by the Hellenic Air Force (Greece) and the Turkish Air Force.
Key Operational Details:
- Service Era: 1956 to 1976, when it was replaced by the F-106 Delta Dart.
- Vietnam Losses: 14 F-102s were lost in Vietnam, including one in air-to-air combat against a MiG-21.
- Final Phase: Many were later converted into PQM-102 unmanned target drones for the military.
