The F-101B Voodoo was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force Air Defense Command (ADC) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s as an all-weather interceptor, tasked with protecting North America from Soviet bombers. It was based at various bases in the US, including Dover AFB, Tyndall AFB, and in Canada.
Key deployment locations and roles included:
- North American Air Defense: The F-101B acted as a primary interceptor for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), with units stationed across the United States and Canada.
- Key U.S. Bases: The 98th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Dover AFB used the F-101B to defend the Eastern U.S.. Other key bases included Hamilton AFB (California), Grand Forks AFB (North Dakota), and Tyndall AFB (Florida).
- Canada: The Royal Canadian Air Force operated F-101B interceptors (known in Canada as CF-101s) starting in 1961 as part of its commitment to NORAD.
- Overseas Duty: While not deployed for combat in Southeast Asia (unlike the reconnaissance variants), F-101B Voodoos were used by the U.S. Air Force at Royal Air Force bases in England during the Cold War.
- Air National Guard: By the 1970s, many F-101Bs were operated by Air National Guard units, including those in Texas, North Dakota, and Oregon.
The F-101B was phased out by 1982, with the last aircraft officially retired from service shortly thereafter.
