The Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless was the primary U.S. Navy and Marine Corps dive bomber used extensively in the Pacific Theater during early World War II (1942–1943), most famously sinking four Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway. It was utilized on carriers, at Henderson Field (Guadalcanal).

Key Battles: The SBD-3 was instrumental at the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway (June 1942), and the Guadalcanal Campaign.
Operational Usage:
Navy Carriers: Operated from USS Enterprise, USS Yorktown, and USS Hornet.
Marine Corps: Used by the "Cactus Air Force" based at Henderson Field, Guadalcanal.
Other Theaters: Utilized during Operation Torch (North Africa).
Specific Roles: Primarily employed for dive-bombing, but also used for scouting and patrol missions.

The SBD-3, often called "Slow But Deadly," was effective due to its ability to dive at steep angles to deliver 1,000-pound bombs.
