The Dassault Rafale M is the carrier-based naval variant of the French omnirole fighter, featuring a reinforced airframe, landing hook, and, unlike other variants, an integrated boarding ladder. First flying in December 1991, the M model entered operational service with the French Navy (Marine Nationale) in 2004, replacing aging F-8 Crusaders on the carrier Charles de Gaulle.
Development and Testing
- Prototypes: Two prototypes were built (M01 and M02). The M01 first flew on December 12, 1991.
- US Trials: Due to a lack of European facilities, initial catapult trials occurred at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 1992, with further trials in 1993 and 1995.
- Service Entry: While production deliveries began in 2000, the aircraft officially entered operational service in 2004.
Operational History
- Deployment: The Rafale M operates from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
- Combat Experience: The type has been combat-proven since 2007, operating in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq, and Syria.
- Modernization: In 2014, the Rafale F3-R standard was introduced, bringing updated radar, communication systems, and enhanced weapons capability, such as the Meteor missile.
- Current Status: 42 Rafale M F3-R aircraft are in service with the French Navy as of 2025.
The Rafale M is designed for air superiority, reconnaissance, ground strike, and nuclear deterrence roles.
