Historical Information
The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the third ship of the Nimitz class. Built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, she was commissioned on March 13, 1982 and named for Congressman Carl Vinson, a longtime advocate of American naval expansion and modernization.
Carl Vinson has served extensively in the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Persian Gulf, supporting Operation Southern Watch, Operation Desert Strike, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. She provided disaster relief to Haiti during Operation Unified Response in 2010, hosted the burial at sea of Osama bin Laden in 2011, and in 2021 began the first operational carrier deployment of the F-35C Lightning II and CMV-22B Osprey.
