Historical Information
Mozambique became independent from Portugal in 1975 and established its own national air force soon afterward. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the service developed from a small post-independence force into a more capable military air arm while the country was fighting the long civil war against RENAMO.
Soviet and East German support transformed the force during this period. By the early 1980s, Mozambique operated aircraft including MiG-21 fighters, An-26 transports, Mi-8 transport helicopters, and Mi-24 attack helicopters, along with trainers and other support aircraft. From 1985 to 1990 the service was known as the People’s Liberation Air Force.
These markings are particularly appropriate for aircraft representing the Mozambican Civil War and Cold War-era southern Africa.
Mozambican insignia and aircraft markings evolved after independence and could differ across aircraft types and years. Reference photographs are recommended when modeling a specific 1980s aircraft.
