The Mitsubishi Ki-21-II "Sally" (Type 97 Heavy Bomber) was a primary Imperial Japanese Army Air Force bomber used extensively in the early stages of WWII (1941–1942) across the Pacific and Far East. It operated in the Malayan, Burmese, Dutch East Indies, and New Guinea campaigns, as well as over China, India, and Australia.
- Key Theatres: Primarily used across Southeast Asia and the Pacific, including major roles in the campaigns for Malaya, Burma, the Dutch East Indies, and New Guinea.
- Target Areas: Bombed allied facilities in India, western China, and northern Australia.
- Initial Action: 12th, 60th, and 98th Hikosentais (units) used the Ki-21 to attack British bases in Malaya and Siam (Thailand) starting in December 1941.
- Operational Period: While active in early offensive campaigns, they were also utilized for training and transport as newer models replaced them on the front lines.
- Role: Known as a reliable heavy bomber, it faced heavy losses only during specific engagements like Rangoon (1941-1942).
