Historical Information

The Iraqi Air Force was established in 1931 as the Royal Iraqi Air Force. Early royal aircraft used a different series of tail markings, but following the overthrow of the monarchy in 1958, the Iraqi national flag became the basis for the air force fin flash.

Because Iraq's national flag changed several times during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the exact form of the fin flash also changed. Red, white, and black horizontal bands remained a recurring feature, while stars, Arabic inscriptions, and other details varied according to the period.

These markings appeared on a wide range of Iraqi aircraft including the Hawker Hunter, MiG-17, MiG-19, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, Su-7, Su-20, Su-22, Su-24, Mirage F1EQ, and other combat and support aircraft.

The Iraqi Air Force became one of the largest Arab air forces during the Cold War and saw extensive combat during the Iran-Iraq War and the 1991 Gulf War, making Iraqi fin markings useful for a wide range of historical gaming scenarios.
