CV Soryu Carrier Division 2 Air Wing – Zeros, Vals & Kates
This set recreates aircraft markings from the Imperial Japanese Navy carrier Soryu, which operated with Hiryu as Carrier Division 2. The air group included Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters, Aichi D3A “Val” dive bombers, and Nakajima B5N “Kate” torpedo/level bombers.
Historical Context
Soryu participated in the Pearl Harbor attack, operations across the Dutch East Indies and Indian Ocean, and the Battle of Midway. At Midway, Soryu was struck and fatally damaged by U.S. carrier dive bombers.
The sheet also includes markings for two Aichi D3A Vals associated with Lt. Cmdr. Takashige Egusa: “Jaja Uma” and “Tora Moyo.” Egusa led the Japanese dive-bomber force during the second-wave attack on Pearl Harbor and became one of the IJN’s best-known dive-bomber leaders.
