Historical Information
Early in the Pacific and CBI air war, RAF units often removed the red center from normal British roundels and replaced it with white. Although this solved the immediate recognition problem, the resulting white center remained highly visible against camouflage. A more subdued two-tone blue marking therefore became characteristic of SEAC aircraft from the middle war years onward.
Representative aircraft include the Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, Republic Thunderbolt, de Havilland Mosquito, Bristol Beaufighter, Consolidated Liberator, Douglas Dakota, and Vultee Vengeance.
SEAC markings were frequently applied or modified at theater level, so exact proportions and shades could vary. This makes aircraft photographs and unit references particularly useful when reproducing a specific squadron or airframe.
Marking dimensions and placement could vary between aircraft types and service periods. Use a dated photograph of the intended airframe to choose the size and combine these insignia with the appropriate unit markings, aircraft numbers and fin markings.
