Historical Information
Before this change, U.S. military aircraft carried a white star with a red center disk. Following the outbreak of war in the Pacific, the red disk was considered a potential source of confusion with the Japanese Hinomaru. On May 1942, the red center was ordered removed from the national insignia.
The resulting white-star marking appeared on aircraft of the U.S. Army Air Forces, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps. It became especially familiar during the battles of 1942 and early 1943 as American air forces fought across the Pacific, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and other theaters.
Representative aircraft carrying this marking included the P-40 Warhawk, P-39 Airacobra, P-38 Lightning, F4F Wildcat, SBD Dauntless, TBF Avenger, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and numerous transports and patrol aircraft.
In June 1943, white horizontal bars were added to the sides of the star-and-circle insignia as part of a new effort to improve recognition at distance. This ended the brief period in which the plain white star on blue served as the principal U.S. national aircraft marking.
