Historical Information
This decal set represents Royal Australian Air Force fin flashes used during World War II, including the Pacific-era blue-and-white tail identification that developed after red was removed from Australian national aircraft markings.
The RAAF entered the war using RAF-derived red, white and blue national markings. In 1942, combat experience in the Pacific led to the removal of red from many Australian aircraft insignia to reduce the risk of confusion with the Japanese Hinomaru. Fin markings evolved alongside the roundels, producing distinctive blue-and-white combinations on operational aircraft.
These flashes are especially appropriate for RAAF aircraft serving in the South West Pacific from 1942 onward. Dimensions and application could vary according to aircraft type, theater orders and repainting in the field.
Representative Aircraft: P-40 Kittyhawk, Spitfire, Beaufighter, Beaufort, Boston, Hudson, Catalina, B-24 Liberator and other RAAF wartime aircraft.
RAAF wartime markings changed quickly during 1942-1943, so photographs of the exact aircraft are strongly recommended to confirm whether red-white-blue or blue-white fin markings were carried at a particular date.
