Historical Information

These 1-600 Italian Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana decals reproduce the distinctive black wing insignia on a white square background used by the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana (ANR) during the final years of World War II. The design features two opposed fasces within a square field and replaced the circular fasces insignia previously associated with the Regia Aeronautica. This white-background version is particularly appropriate for early ANR aircraft during late 1943 and early 1944.

The ANR was established in northern Italy following the September 1943 Armistice, when Italy was divided between the Allied-supported government in the south and the German-supported Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana) in the north. The ANR operated alongside the German Luftwaffe from late 1943 until the collapse of the Italian Social Republic in April 1945.

To distinguish its aircraft from both the former Regia Aeronautica and the Allied-aligned Italian Co-Belligerent Air Force, the ANR adopted an entirely new national wing insignia. The marking consisted of two opposing fasces displayed in black against a white square background and was normally applied to the upper and lower surfaces of the wings.

The white square provided excellent visibility against the camouflage finishes inherited from the Regia Aeronautica or adopted from German Luftwaffe practice. However, its high visibility was undesirable on operational combat aircraft. The white background was officially abolished in March 1944, after which black insignia were increasingly applied directly over the aircraft camouflage. This makes the white-background version especially suitable for representing early-period ANR aircraft from late 1943 through early 1944.

The marking appeared on important ANR fighter types including the Fiat G.55 Centauro, Macchi C.205 Veltro, and other Italian aircraft that remained available after the Armistice. As the war continued, ANR fighter units increasingly received German aircraft, particularly the Messerschmitt Bf 109G, which could carry a mixture of Italian and German markings depending upon the aircraft, unit, and period being represented.

The ANR also used a distinctive Italian green-white-red tricolor with a serrated yellow border on the fuselage and tail. When combined with these wing insignia, the markings created an aircraft identification system clearly different from both the earlier Regia Aeronautica and the Italian forces fighting alongside the Allies.
