Historical Information

France was one of the earliest nations to adopt a national aircraft roundel. In July 1912, the French military introduced the blue-white-red cockade as an aircraft recognition marking, drawing directly from the colors of the French national cockade. The design became one of the most influential aircraft insignia in history and helped inspire the roundels subsequently adopted by Britain and other Allied air services.

The yellow-bordered version represented on this decal sheet became the standard French postwar marking. Its development was influenced by French units operating British and American aircraft during the later stages of WWII, when French tricolor markings were frequently applied in place of Allied insignia while retaining the highly visible yellow border. A French Air Force directive dated January 31, 1945 formally specified tricolor roundels with a yellow edging, establishing the style that became characteristic of postwar French aviation.

Yellow-bordered roundels appeared on a wide variety of French aircraft during the 1940s through the Cold War, including types such as the Spitfire, Vampire, F-84 Thunderjet, Ouragan, Mystère, F-100 Super Sabre, Mirage III, Mirage F1, Jaguar, and C-160 Transall, with size and placement varying according to aircraft and period. Beginning in the 1970s, roundels on combat aircraft became progressively smaller, and the yellow border was officially eliminated from most standard markings during the 1980s, although it remained visible on some aircraft for considerably longer.

The yellow-bordered roundel should not be confused exclusively with Vichy French markings. Vichy aircraft also used yellow edging during part of WWII, but typically combined it with distinctive red-and-yellow recognition striping on the cowling and tail. The roundels on this sheet are particularly representative of the familiar post-1945 French Air Force style that remained in widespread use for several decades.
