Historical Context
The 577th Bombardment Squadron served with the 392nd Bombardment Group, an Eighth Air Force B-24 Liberator organization based at RAF Wendling in Norfolk, England. The group began combat operations in 1943 and attacked aircraft factories, oil facilities, transportation targets and other strategic objectives throughout occupied Europe and Germany.
During its operational career, the 392nd's Liberators passed through several camouflage and marking phases. Later high-visibility group and squadron markings made aircraft easier to identify during formation assembly and provide a striking contrast to the earlier, more subdued schemes used by the group.
This sheet represents the 577th Bombardment Squadron's high-visibility marking period for historically accurate 1-300 B-24 Liberators.
