Historical Context
The 713th Bombardment Squadron served with the 448th Bombardment Group, an Eighth Air Force B-24 Liberator unit based at RAF Seething in Norfolk, England. The group entered combat in 1944 and flew strategic bombing missions against airfields, transportation networks, industrial centers and other targets throughout occupied Europe and Germany.
As the Eighth Air Force expanded its daylight bombing offensive, high-visibility group and squadron markings became increasingly important for assembling and identifying large Liberator formations. The 713th's markings are representative of this later-war recognition system and make an especially distinctive subject on natural-metal B-24s.
For this sheet, paint the aircraft's tail fins yellow before applying the decals. The circle and call-letter areas are printed clear so the yellow painted surface shows through, helping the tail markings match the surrounding yellow finish.
