Historical Context
The 66th Bombardment Squadron served with the veteran 44th Bombardment Group, one of the earliest Eighth Air Force B-24 Liberator groups to operate from England. Based at RAF Shipdham in Norfolk, the group flew strategic missions against U-boat facilities, industrial targets, transportation centers and other objectives in occupied Europe and Germany.
The 44th also deployed aircraft to North Africa during 1943 and took part in the Ploesti oil-refinery operation. Its early-war Liberators illustrate the changing camouflage, national insignia and squadron-code practices used during the formative years of the American daylight bombing offensive.
