Historical Context
The 578th Bombardment Squadron served with the 392nd Bombardment Group, which operated B-24 Liberators with the Eighth Air Force from RAF Wendling in Norfolk, England. The group began combat operations in 1943 and flew against aircraft-production facilities, oil targets, transportation centers and other strategic objectives throughout occupied Europe and Germany.
This sheet represents the squadron's earlier operational marking period, before the more conspicuous high-visibility recognition schemes associated with later-war Liberator formations. It is particularly suitable for olive-drab and other early-campaign B-24 finishes.
Together with later 392nd Bomb Group markings, the 578th provides a useful way to represent the evolution of Eighth Air Force B-24 camouflage and unit identification during the European air war.
