The Xian H-6 is a Chinese twin-engine strategic bomber developed from the Soviet Tupolev Tu-16. China obtained Tu-16 technology in the 1950s and subsequently established domestic production, with the H-6 becoming one of the longest-serving combat-aircraft families in Chinese service.
Over decades of development, the H-6 evolved from a conventional medium bomber into a long-range missile carrier. Later versions received modern navigation systems, electronic warfare equipment, improved engines, aerial-refueling capability on selected variants, and the ability to carry stand-off cruise and anti-ship weapons. Modern H-6 variants have become an important component of China's long-range maritime and regional strike capability.

Development and Origin: The H-6 originated as a Chinese-built derivative of the Soviet Tu-16 Badger. Chinese H-6s have been used extensively for regional patrols, exercises and long-range power-projection missions, although modern Chinese H-6 variants do not have a widely documented record of combat employment.
Iran-Iraq War: Iraq operated the export H-6D and used the type for long-range maritime strike missions during the Iran-Iraq War, including attacks with Chinese-built anti-ship missiles against shipping in the Persian Gulf.
1991 Gulf War: Iraq's remaining H-6 force was effectively eliminated during the 1991 Gulf War era, ending foreign operational use of the type.
Foreign Operators:
Iraq: Iraq was the principal foreign operator of the Chinese-built H-6, receiving H-6D maritime-strike aircraft configured to employ anti-ship missiles. These aircraft saw combat during the Iran-Iraq War.
Most other nations associated with the broader Tu-16 family operated Soviet-built Tu-16s rather than Chinese H-6s, so they should not be treated as H-6 operators.
Upgrades and Retirement: Rather than being retired, the H-6 has repeatedly been modernized. H-6K, H-6J and H-6N variants incorporate major improvements in engines, avionics, sensors and stand-off weapons, extending the useful life of a design whose origins date to the early Cold War.
