WWI German Naval Gun Turret Markings
Have been asked multiple times for to create these. I finally gave in. There are 12 different sized circles on each sheet. I lost count of how many total circles on the sheet but it’s a lot.
Caveat emptor:
WWI is not my gig. I do not have any WWI ships to scale the decals to. I took a best guess based on WWII turrets.
As in the picture, many WWI turrets had protrusions on top. The decals will not work on such turrets.
As a reminder, the decals need to be individually cut out. If the turret has a protrusion in the center, you will need to cut out a portion of the clear center of the white ring as well.
Historical Information
During the First World War, the Imperial German Navy used increasingly visible ship-recognition markings to help friendly aircraft and airships distinguish German warships from enemy vessels. Main-battery turret roofs were often painted dark, while large white circles or rings began appearing on capital-ship turret tops and related deck positions as aerial-recognition devices. Their exact placement and size varied by ship and date.
These markings became especially associated with the later war years, when German naval aviation and fleet units required clearer identification from above. Period photographs show substantial variation, so individual ships may have carried different combinations of rings, dark turret tops, or other recognition colors during different operations.
