The USS Yorktown (CV-5), USS Enterprise (CV-6), and USS Hornet (CV-8) were Yorktown-class fleet carriers. Their combination of speed, aircraft capacity, and operational range made the class central to U.S. carrier operations during the first year of the Pacific War.
Together, ships of the class fought at Midway, Guadalcanal, the Eastern Solomons, and the Santa Cruz Islands. Yorktown and Hornet were lost in 1942, while Enterprise survived the war as its most decorated U.S. Navy ship.
