Historical Information
Commissioning: USS Steamer Bay (CVE-87) was a Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier built by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company at Vancouver, Washington, and commissioned on 4 April 1944.
Major Campaigns & Notable Operations: Supplied replacement aircraft to Task Force 38, supported the Lingayen Gulf landings with Taffy 2, and then fought through the Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Sakishima campaigns.
Combat Service: Her air group flew direct-support, patrol, and strike missions during the 1945 amphibious campaigns before the ship returned to logistics support for fast-carrier operations against Japan.
Ultimate Fate / Postwar Disposition: Placed out of commission in reserve after the war and sold for scrap in 1959.
