Historical Information
Commissioning: USS Ommaney Bay (CVE-79) was a Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier built by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company at Vancouver, Washington, and commissioned on 11 February 1944.
Major Campaigns & Notable Operations: Supported the western Pacific advance through the Palaus and Leyte and served with Taffy 2 during the Philippines campaign before sailing with the force bound for Lingayen Gulf.
Combat Service: On 4 January 1945 in the Sulu Sea, a kamikaze crashed into the ship and triggered severe fires and ammunition explosions. The carrier was abandoned and later scuttled by a U.S. destroyer.
Ultimate Fate / Postwar Disposition: Lost in action on 4 January 1945 while en route to the Lingayen Gulf operation.
