USS Monterey (CVL-26) MS Blue — 1-2400 Scale Deck Decal
Historically accurate 1-2400 scale light aircraft carrier deck decal representing USS Monterey (CVL-26) in the MS Blue configuration.
Historical Information
The USS Monterey (CVL-26) was an Independence-class light aircraft carrier operated by the United States Navy. She was one of nine carriers in her class, converted from Cleveland-class light-cruiser hulls, and was commissioned on June 17, 1943.
Designed to combine cruiser speed with a compact carrier flight deck, the Independence class provided fast-carrier task forces with additional fighter protection and strike capacity throughout the Pacific War.
Aircraft Complement: Typically about 33 aircraft in late-war service, commonly organized around approximately 24 Grumman F6F Hellcat fighters and 9 Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger torpedo bombers. The exact complement varied by date, mission, and assigned air group.
Wartime Service: Monterey supported campaigns in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, New Guinea, the Marianas, and the Philippines. She was damaged during Typhoon Cobra in December 1944 when aircraft broke loose and caused a serious hangar-deck fire.
Fate: Returned to service in 1950, Monterey operated primarily as a training carrier before being decommissioned again in 1956. She was sold for scrapping in 1971.
