Historical Information

Commissioning: USS Midway / St. Lo (CVE-63) was a Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier built by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company at Vancouver, Washington, and commissioned on 23 October 1943.

Major Campaigns & Notable Operations: Commissioned as Midway and later renamed St. Lo, she supported the advance through the western Pacific and the October 1944 Leyte invasion with Taffy 3.

Combat Service: On 25 October 1944 she fought in the Battle off Samar as Taffy 3 faced a much stronger Japanese surface force. After the surface action, a kamikaze crashed through her flight deck and ignited devastating internal explosions.

Ultimate Fate / Postwar Disposition: Sunk in action off Samar on 25 October 1944.

The deck treatment represented by this decal reflects the dark MS Blue flight-deck stain used by the U.S. Navy during World War II.
