Historical Information

 

Commissioning: USS Makassar Strait (CVE-91) was a Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier built by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company at Vancouver, Washington, and commissioned on 27 April 1944.

 

Major Campaigns & Notable Operations: Supported the Lingayen Gulf operation, then joined escort-carrier forces for Iwo Jima and Okinawa before shifting to carrier-pilot refresher training in the Marianas.

 

Combat Service: Her aircraft flew close-support and patrol missions and were credited with destroying four enemy aircraft during combat operations in the western Pacific.

 

Ultimate Fate / Postwar Disposition: Decommissioned in August 1946, later designated for use as a target, and ultimately grounded off California after target-service use in 1961.

 

The deck treatment represented by this decal reflects the faded grey-blue appearance of weathered wartime flight-deck stain.
