Historical Information
The USS Long Island (CVE-1) was converted from the cargo ship Mormacmail and commissioned on June 2, 1941. Initially designated AVG-1, she became the U.S. Navy’s first escort carrier and helped demonstrate the value of small carriers for aircraft transport, training, convoy support, and antisubmarine operations.
 
During World War II, Long Island trained carrier pilots and ferried aircraft across the Pacific. In August 1942, she delivered Marine fighters and dive bombers to Henderson Field, strengthening American air power during the Guadalcanal campaign.
