Historical Information
The USS Langley (CV-1) was converted from the collier USS Jupiter and commissioned as the U.S. Navy’s first aircraft carrier on March 20, 1922. She served as an experimental platform that helped establish American carrier aviation, flight-deck procedures, and pilot training.
 
Converted into a seaplane tender and redesignated AV-3 before World War II, Langley supported Allied operations in the Southwest Pacific. While transporting P-40 fighters to Java, she was fatally damaged by Japanese aircraft on February 27, 1942, and scuttled by her escorts.
