Historical Information
This sheet covers two very different U.S. Navy surface-combatant families. The Iowa-class battleships combined high speed, heavy armor, and nine 16-inch guns, later receiving missiles and modern electronics during their 1980s reactivations. The two nuclear-powered California-class guided-missile cruisers entered service in the 1970s as long-endurance carrier escorts with strong anti-air and anti-submarine capabilities. Both classes are now retired.
