Historical Information
The Iowa class was the final and most powerful class of U.S. battleships completed for service. Designed for high speed and armed with nine 16-inch guns, the four completed ships served from World War II through the Cold War era. Reactivated in the 1980s with Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles, Iowa-class battleships again became major surface-strike platforms before final retirement in the early 1990s.
