USS Independence (CVL-22) MS Blue — 1-2400 Scale Deck Decal
Historically accurate 1-2400 scale light aircraft carrier deck decal representing USS Independence (CVL-22) in the MS Blue configuration.
Historical Information
The USS Independence (CVL-22) was an Independence-class light aircraft carrier operated by the United States Navy. She was the lead ship of a class of nine carriers, converted from Cleveland-class light-cruiser hulls, and was commissioned on January 14, 1943.
Designed to combine cruiser speed with a compact carrier flight deck, the Independence class provided fast-carrier task forces with additional fighter protection and strike capacity throughout the Pacific War.
Aircraft Complement: Typically about 33 aircraft in late-war service, commonly organized around approximately 24 Grumman F6F Hellcat fighters and 9 Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger torpedo bombers. The exact complement varied by date, mission, and assigned air group.
Wartime Service: Independence supported operations in the Central Pacific, including the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaigns, raids against Rabaul, and the invasion of the Philippines. She was torpedoed in November 1943, repaired, and returned to combat service.
Fate: After World War II, Independence served as a target during the 1946 Operation Crossroads atomic-bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. She was later used for radiological studies and was scuttled off California in 1951.
