Historical Information
USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is the lead ship of the Gerald R. Ford class and the first new U.S. aircraft-carrier class in more than four decades. Commissioned on July 22, 2017, Ford introduced major changes including the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG), a redesigned flight deck and island, advanced weapons elevators, and increased electrical generating capacity. The carrier completed its first operational deployment in 2022 and returned from an extended deployment in May 2026. In July 2026, Ford entered its first planned incremental availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard for scheduled maintenance and modernization.
