Historical Information
The USS George Washington (CVN-73) is the sixth ship of the Nimitz class. Built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, she was commissioned on July 4, 1992 and named for the first President of the United States.
George Washington supported Operation Vigilant Warrior, Operation Southern Watch, and post-September 11 homeland-defense operations under Operation Noble Eagle. In 2008 she became the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier permanently forward-deployed to Japan. After completing a major refueling and complex overhaul, she returned to Yokosuka in 2024 to resume forward-deployed Seventh Fleet service.
