Historical Information
The USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) was laid down on 1 December 1943 at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn. Originally named Coral Sea, she was renamed on 8 May 1945 in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, launched on 29 April 1945, and commissioned on 27 October 1945. Because she entered service after the end of World War II, she did not see wartime combat in that conflict.
Roosevelt became a frequent Sixth Fleet and NATO carrier during the Cold War. She underwent major modernization, supported early U.S. carrier jet trials, and made her principal combat deployment during the Vietnam War in 1966–67. Her final deployment in 1976–77 was notable for the first overseas operational carrier deployment of Marine AV-8A Harriers.
