Historical Information
The USS Coral Sea (CVB-43) was built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Newport News, Virginia, launched on 2 April 1946, and commissioned on 1 October 1947. As the last of the three completed Midway-class carriers, she entered service too late for World War II combat.
Coral Sea became one of the Navy's most active Cold War carriers. She served during the Suez Crisis, underwent major modernization from 1957 to 1960, made repeated combat deployments to Southeast Asia, supported the evacuation of Saigon, flew strikes during the SS Mayaguez crisis, and later participated in U.S. operations against Libya in 1986.
