Historical Information
The California class consisted of two nuclear-powered guided-missile cruisers, USS California (CGN-36) and USS South Carolina (CGN-37). Entering service in the mid-1970s, they combined long endurance with fleet air-defense, anti-submarine, and surface-warfare capabilities and were well suited to operating with nuclear-powered carrier battle groups. Both ships were retired in the late 1990s.
