Historical Information
Commissioning: USS Bismarck Sea (CVE-95) was a Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier built by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company at Vancouver, Washington, and commissioned on 20 May 1944.
Major Campaigns & Notable Operations: Supported the Philippines campaign and then joined the escort-carrier force covering the February 1945 invasion of Iwo Jima.
Combat Service: On 21 February 1945, while supporting Iwo Jima, two kamikazes struck the carrier in quick succession. Fires and exploding ordnance became uncontrollable, forcing abandonment; 318 sailors were lost when the ship sank.
Ultimate Fate / Postwar Disposition: Sunk by kamikaze attack off Iwo Jima on 21 February 1945.
