Historical Information
The America class is the U.S. Navy’s newest large-deck amphibious assault ship design. USS America and USS Tripoli were built without well decks to emphasize aviation capability, while Flight I beginning with Bougainville restores a well deck while retaining expanded aviation facilities for Marine expeditionary operations. USS America is the lead ship of the class and was commissioned in 2014.
