Historical Information
Merchant Aircraft Carriers (MAC ships) were merchant vessels adapted with flight decks so they could continue carrying vital cargo while providing air cover for Atlantic convoys. They began entering service in 1943 and typically operated small Fleet Air Arm detachments, especially Fairey Swordfish aircraft for anti-submarine patrols, helping close the mid-Atlantic air gap until sufficient escort carriers became available.
