Historical Information
HMS Courageous began life as a First World War light battlecruiser and was extensively converted into an aircraft carrier during the 1920s. At the start of World War II she was assigned to anti-submarine patrols in the Western Approaches; on 17 September 1939 she was torpedoed by German U-boat U-29 and sank, becoming the first British warship lost to enemy action in the war.
