Historical Information
HMS Hermes (95) was laid down as a purpose-designed aircraft carrier and commissioned in 1924. During World War II she served in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, supported British operations in East Africa and the Middle East, and joined the Eastern Fleet at Ceylon; on 9 April 1942 she was caught without embarked aircraft and sunk by Japanese carrier dive bombers near Batticaloa.
