Historical Information
HMS Illustrious (87), lead ship of the Illustrious class, was built by Vickers-Armstrongs and commissioned on 25 May 1940. Her aircraft carried out the famous night attack on the Italian fleet at Taranto in November 1940; after surviving severe dive-bombing damage in 1941 she returned to service for operations off Madagascar, in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and later with the British Pacific Fleet.
