Historical Information
The Illustrious class was the Royal Navy’s first wartime generation of armoured-deck fleet carriers, designed under treaty displacement limits with protection and survivability prioritized over maximum aircraft capacity. The class and its close derivatives fought across the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific, demonstrating the value of an armoured flight deck under heavy bomb and kamikaze attack.
