Historical Information
The Type 055 entered service with Nanchang in January 2020 and was developed as the PLAN's premier large surface combatant for area air defense, long-range strike, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and task-group command. Its 112-cell universal vertical launch system provides a large mixed missile load, while its sensors and aviation facilities make the class particularly important as an escort for Chinese carrier and expeditionary groups. Ten Type 055 ships were in service by 2026, with additional hulls under construction.
