Historical Information
Turkish aviation used the red square with a white border for much of the period from the end of World War I to the early 1970s. The geometric marking continued after the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923.
The Turkish air arm expanded through the interwar and World War II periods. Its aircraft came from different manufacturing traditions, while the square national marking provided a common identity across the inventory.
Postwar American military assistance and NATO membership brought further modernization. The red square appeared on aircraft including the P-47, C-47, F-84, F-86, F-100, F-102, and F-104.
The circular red-white-red insignia returned in 1972. When modeling an aircraft around the transition, match its national marking to a dated photograph rather than selecting solely by aircraft type.
