The Tupolev Tu-95 "Bear" has been used by the Soviet Union and Russia as a long-range strategic bomber, missile platform, and maritime reconnaissance aircraft since 1956. Key deployment areas include Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific patrols, with combat usage in Syria (2015) and for missile strikes against Ukraine. 

 

Key Usage and Deployment Areas:

  • Strategic Nuclear Deterrence: Used as a key component of the Soviet and Russian nuclear triad, capable of carrying nuclear bombs and cruise missiles.
  • Long-Range Patrols: Routinely operates over the Arctic Ocean, the Atlantic, and the Pacific, often near the Alaskan and European borders.
  • Combat Operations:
    • Syria (2015): First used in combat to launch cruise missiles against targets in Syria.
    • Ukraine: Actively used by the Russian Aerospace Forces to launch cruise missiles.
  • Maritime Reconnaissance: Variants like the Tu-95RTs were designed for maritime surveillance.
  • Special Missions: Used for Cold War-era electronic intelligence gathering and to carry the "Tsar Bomba" in 1961.
