The Tupolev Tu-16 "Badger" was a strategic bomber used primarily by the Soviet Union (Air Force and Navy) from 1954 to 1993, with significant deployment in Egypt, Iraq, Indonesia, and China. It saw combat in the Middle East, the Afghan War, and the Iran-Iraq War, while China continues to operate modernized H-6 variants.

 

Key Areas of Operation & Usage:

  • Soviet Union/Russia: Extensively used as a premier strategic bomber and nuclear delivery platform (dropped the first Soviet H-bomb in 1955). Used for reconnaissance over the North Sea and Pacific.
  • China (Xian H-6): Produced under license and remains in active service with modernized variants (H-6K).
  • Egypt: Utilized in the North Yemen Civil War, the Six-Day War (where most were destroyed on the ground), and the Yom Kippur War.
  • Iraq: Used during the Six-Day War and the Iran-Iraq War (including anti-ship missions).
  • Indonesia: Acquired for Operation Trikora in the 1960s, notably during tensions with Australia.
