Historical Context
The Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike) is the primary ground-attack variant of the Panavia Tornado, a twin-engine, variable-sweep wing multi-role combat aircraft. Developed by a tri-national consortium (Panavia Aircraft GmbH) consisting of the UK, West Germany, and Italy, it was designed specifically for high-speed, low-level penetration strikes against enemy airfields and hardened targets. 
Key Features & Design
Variable Geometry Wings: The "swing-wing" design allows for high-speed stability at low altitudes (wings swept back) and better lift for takeoff and landing (wings forward).
Terrain-Following Radar (TFR): This specialized system enables the aircraft to fly at extremely low altitudes automatically, hugging the terrain to avoid enemy radar detection.
Powerplant: Equipped with two Turbo-Union RB199 engines featuring thrust reversers, which allow the Tornado to operate from short or damaged runways.
Performance: Capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 2.2 at high altitude. 
Operational History & Variants
Primary Users: The IDS variant was operated by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), the Italian Air Force, and the Royal Saudi Air Force. The UK's version was designated as the Tornado GR1/GR4.
Combat Roles: Its missions include close air support (CAS), battlefield interdiction, tactical reconnaissance, and maritime strike.
Major Conflict Participation: The aircraft saw significant action in the 1991 Gulf War, the Bosnian and Kosovo Wars, and operations in Afghanistan and Libya.
Status: While the UK retired its fleet in 2019, Germany and Italy continue to operate upgraded IDS variants (such as the German ASSTA and SLE programs) with plans to keep them in service until the mid-to-late 2020s.

Development and Origin: The Panavia Tornado was developed jointly by Britain, West Germany, and Italy as a variable-sweep, twin-engine combat aircraft optimized for high-speed low-level operations. The RAF GR.1 was Britain’s principal strike version of the IDS family.
Military and Combat Operations: RAF Tornado GR.1s saw intensive combat during the 1991 Gulf War and later operations over the Balkans and Iraq. Tornado strike variants also served operationally with Germany, Italy, and Saudi Arabia.
Foreign Operators: Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom became the principal Tornado operators, with national variants tailored to strike, reconnaissance, electronic-combat, and air-defense missions.
Upgrades and Retirement: RAF GR.1s were extensively modernized into the GR.4, which remained in service until the RAF retired the Tornado in 2019.
Design and Armament: Representative weapons included conventional and laser-guided bombs, JP233 runway-denial weapons, anti-radiation missiles, reconnaissance pods, and later precision-guided stand-off weapons.
