The T-38 Talon is primarily used by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) as an advanced jet trainer to prepare pilots for fighter and bomber aircraft, a role it has filled for over 60 years. Beyond training, it is extensively used by NASA for astronaut training and chase planes, and by the US Navy for test pilot training.
Key Locations and Uses:
- USAF Training: Primarily used at bases like Sheppard (Texas), Vance (Oklahoma), Randolph (Texas), and formerly Williams (Arizona) for undergraduate pilot training.
- NATO Training: The Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program at Sheppard AFB uses T-38s for international pilot training.
- NASA: Used for astronaut proficiency, shuttle training, and chase planes at Johnson Space Center and other locations.
- Adversary/Test Roles: Used as "red-air" aggressors by Air Combat Command (Langley AFB, Holloman AFB) and for testing by the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB.
- Demonstration: Flown by the USAF Thunderbirds demonstration team from 1974 to 1983.
The "White Rocket" has also been used to train pilots from numerous allied nations, making it one of the world's most utilized supersonic trainers.
