Historical Information

Syria achieved independence in 1946, and its military aviation organization developed rapidly during the following years. The Syrian Air Force was formally established in the late 1940s and entered combat during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

The early Syrian national colors were green, white, and black, with three red stars appearing in the white section of the national flag. On military aircraft, a horizontal black-white-green fin flash was used during much of the 1949-1958 period, while the corresponding national markings were used elsewhere on the aircraft.

Early Syrian aviation initially relied on propeller-driven aircraft before moving rapidly into the jet age. Aircraft associated with this period included the T-6/Harvard family, Fiat G.55, Gloster Meteor, MiG-15, and MiG-17.

The arrival of Soviet-built MiG fighters during the 1950s reflected Syria's increasingly close military relationship with the Soviet bloc and began a relationship that would shape Syrian military aviation for decades.

In 1958, Syria joined Egypt in the United Arab Republic, producing a new red-white-black national flag and corresponding aircraft markings.
